The fundamentals of biblical Hebrew: a small but practical vocabulary, an understanding of the grammatical structure of the language, and practice in the use of lexicons and commentaries. Aims to provide the minister with a practical study tool.

Biblical Hebrew I is designed to introduce the student to the basics of the language. The goal is to develop a practical, working knowledge of the language and to introduce the student to the available academic tools (lexicons, grammars, commentaries, bible software, etc.) designed to assist the student and future minister in interpreting the OT in its original language. As with the study of any language, interpretation of texts is a complex process, which requires the integration of several categories of knowledge and skills, i.e. morphology, syntax, and lexicography.

Each student is expected to master the designated contents of the assigned textbook and to read aloud from the Hebrew text with accuracy and understanding. In addition, the course seeks to establish a foundation for students to pursue further Hebrew studies (specifically Hebrew II and Hebrew III).

The goal for the level of proficiency to be attained in this course is mastering the paradigm of the Hebrew strong verb, building a basic vocabulary of words used 200 times or more in the Hebrew Bible (250 Hebrew words), and to appropriately utilize Hebrew resources (dictionaries, grammars, software).
